Highlighting LGBTQIA+ Design Influencers: Alma Lopez
We enjoy when visual elements of a piece of artwork are thoughtful and unique, or even surprising at times. Alma Lopez is an artist who has been creating thought-provoking work for more than 30 years. By drawing from her heritage, she creates unique pieces that make people talk and remember them.
We love that Lopez’s pieces are memorable—even a little radical. Her ability to take familiar, iconic imagery and reframe it with a modern twist puts her creativity in a category of its own.
According to her website, Lopez is currently an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Cesar E. Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies and LGBTQ Studies Program at UCLA. By teaching courses in “art censorship, queer art, chicanx/lantinx art, public art and digital art,” she is passing on her legacy of envelope-pushing art to the next generation.
